Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The children in my classroom come from all walks of life. Their families not only come from various places in the United States, but also have immigrated from around the globe, including Russia, The Philippines, Mexico, and The Middle East. They reside in a lower socioeconomic area, and don't always have access to the latest and greatest school supplies and technology. We are a Title One school and our families can't offer our students the funding that the more affluent schools in our district can offer. Although they are all third graders, each child is unique and curious about the world around them. They are amazing and eager to experience all that I can bring into our classroom.
My Project
My students are crazy about balance balls! One of my students was given a "yoga ball", from our school's occupational therapist, and the rest of the students went crazy trying to earn a turn to use the balance ball. It was tough for me as their teacher when I couldn't offer the same opportunities to each student, especially when I saw how it benefited all of the students. The students who used the balance ball were better focused and they were getting exercise throughout the day by working core muscles while balancing on the ball. My students' idea is for the whole class to have a balance ball. At times during the day, the exercise balls can be used for "brain break" activities in the classroom. Everybody needs brain breaks! What an amazing advantage my students would have with this addition to the classroom.
