Today we have many students who choose not to read due to the fact they are given books that do spark their interest. The joy and excitement of reading is a feeling that no child should have to miss out on because of the lack of resources they are given.
I teach in a high needs school in Texas.
My students do not have a lot resources that they need and deserve. Over half of the school is on free and reduce lunch and could use any help that we can get to help us get high interest books on different reading levels.
My Project
Every day my students participate in 30 minutes of independent reading time and they have to read for at least 20 minutes at home. I want to be able to give them a wide variety of books to read that will catch their interest and make them want to read more. A lot of our kids enter the 3rd grade below reading level. They need high interest books to build their fluency and reading comprehension. With your help this can happen!
Most of my kids enter 3rd grade not enjoying reading.
Because they are below level and have struggled majority of their life finding books that interest them, they get frustrated and discourage easily. The books I have chosen are new and high interest books that most 3rd graders enjoy. They will use these books everyday during independent reading and at home. It will give them choice and hopefully hook them into reading so they become more confident.
