My students need 6 balance ball chairs, seating discs, fitness DVDs, books, sensory balls, and comfy seating so that they can "get the wiggles out" while working hard.
Do you remember having to sit still for long periods of time when you were little? It was very challenging! Even as adults, we often need to get up from our chair and stretch, walk, and take a break before getting to work. My students are the same way.
I teach some very active and energetic second graders.
My students are fantastic. They are hard-working, engaged, and interested in the content that they are learning. Unfortunately, the rigor of our curriculum and preparation for state tests does not allow for my students to take an extra recess in the morning or afternoon. Because of this, they are often full of energy and have a difficult time focusing if they can't "get the wiggles out."
My Project
My students need six, balance balls that will replace their standard chairs, four seating disc cushions that will give them sensory input during the day, and a variety of comfortable seats for our classroom library. My students would also greatly benefit from books that describe a healthy lifestyle, sensory balls that they can squeeze, and fitness DVDs that we can put in on a rainy day to infuse our work time with some movement. These materials will allow the students to continue working even while their muscles are being engaged. Students will be able to lightly bounce on the balls while they work, and their core muscles will be highly engaged while their brains work on their tasks. The books about being healthy will reinforce our discussions about healthy bodies and healthy minds working together.
This project will positively enhance the learning experiences of 22 students in my class.
The comfortable seating will allow students to enjoy their books in different settings. The balance balls, DVDs, and cushions will provide an opportunity for students to move during the day, with little interruption to the learning that is taking place in the room. Finally, students with ADHD and other sensory needs will have tools to help them focus and stay on task.
