As a fourth year teacher of Orientation to Life and Careers, I continue to search for fun and exciting ways to teach this curriculum. The current units include reading about the following topics: transitions from school to work, how to problem-solve, strengthening study skills, and similar topics relating to careers and planning for the future. There's a lot of reading, and at times I feel this is too routine! I want to spice this up. My proposal is to include a unit on "How to Budget". Not just "reading", but actually disperse check books and use these guidelines for deposits: a. Students will have $100 deposited into their accounts for every 100% they receive on their tests and $25 for exceptional assignments completed. (Pretend of course) b. Students are responsible for keeping their checking account accurate/ but have Seniors (Or business majors come in and check their accounting!) c. At the end of the unit students will be able to write checks from their accounts and purchase merchandise (hopefully donated) from area businesses. Materials needed: checkbooks for 240 students and calculators with log books. The goal is for students to have "fun" while learning to balance a checking account. I want students to "experience" relevant book keeping, instead of just reading about it. Thank you for your favor.
