My Students

Diverse is the best word I can use to describe my students. Students within the special education program have many challenges. Often those challenges go far beyond academics. As a special education teacher of more than 10 years, I recognize the needs of my learners and use all of the resources that I have to assist their learning and amplify success on their levels. Often my students are from poverty stricken homes with little support or with parents who also have learning disabilities and cannot help their children. Language barriers and cultural divides further complicate the home/school connection. Furthermore, most of my students read two years below grade level making it difficult to have independent success in all academic areas. My students deserve the most up-to-date in education to ensure success in third grade.

My Project

Students with special needs often have trouble with focus. Balance ball chairs in the classroom allow students to move while focusing on their work. Often, these chairs are shared among the students in the classroom on an “as needed” basis. Physical therapist and child study team members have suggested these chairs for students who struggle to stay focused and meet the needs of the highly active general education classroom. When students begin feeling antsy or feel the need to move, they can use these chairs to get the "wiggles" out and still get work done. Inclusive children need different materials to help ensure their success.
