This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
On a typical day in my library students browse books, spend time in our maker space area working with manipulatives, playing board games, working on the LEGO wall, using our laptops, working on homework, and many other activities encouraging individual or collaborative student time. My library is a safe haven for all students - some students who see middle school as a hectic environment. I want to offer an inviting environment to my students, a place that is welcoming, a place that is comforting. I want to offer flexible seating.
I have the pleasure to serve as the Media Specialist for a Positive Behavior Support School in a low performing middle school in a lower income community.
It is a Title I school of 768 students. Demographically it is made up of 85 percent African American children with 100 percent of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. I am in a school where the principal is a strong advocate of student guided learning with flexible choices for student comfort and concentration.
My Project
I have students that can't sit still while working on any project. With flexible seating, kinesthetic learners will engage their personal learning style to experience success that may not otherwise ever be reached.
Students who tend to lean back on two legs of a chair, endangering themselves and others, will benefit tremendously by this new innovation.
Balance balls will help my students reach their full potential in the library, particularly those with sensory processing disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or just a strong need to fidget.
Some students need more movement than others. Being in motion allows their brains to be engaged. Movement actually allows for alertness and attention, once again showing how non-conventional seating can improve grades.
