My students are in the 4th grade and many come from homes where Spanish is the native language. Students have many responsibilities at home that make life hard at times at school. One hundred percent of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch. This can sometimes be the only meals students eat. Our school is in a high poverty area and parents work very hard to make ends meet.
Students struggle with anger issues and low self-esteem.
This has a huge impact on how they learn in class. These issues also affect how students react to others. Many students continue to struggle and have no basic skills on how to cope with their problems.
Students also struggle with how to communicate, release excess energy the right way, and staying focused in class. Even with many issues, my sweet and bright students come to school doing their best to learn every day.
My Project
I teach at a school with many issues hindering students learning in the classroom. The main issue being trauma. Many students come from divorced parents, incarcerated parent(s), and grandparents stepping in raising their grandchildren. Students come to school tired, confused, and sometimes scared. This makes focus a big problem throughout the day.
Bal-A-Vis-X is Balance-Auditory-Vision-eXercises that enables the whole mind-body system to experience the natural symmetrical flow of a pendulum.
This promotes focus, cooperation, and helps address neurological issues. This technique has been proven to help students with trauma, ADHD, and mood disorders. Students are self-challenged as they perform individual, group, and pair exercises. This is a fun way to engage students and address their issues at the same time.
