"Teaching kids how to feed themselves and how to live in a community responsibly is the center of an education."
- Alice Waters
Our class is a separate classroom, so the students learn all subjects areas in our room.
Our students are in a separate classroom for students with autism and related disorders.
They are 6th, 7th, and 8th-graders in a public middle school in a city. All of our students are unique and love to learn. They are very excited about working with their general education peers and cooking! Even though many of our students are non-verbal they have opinions about what they like and don't like. We love hands-on activities and relating what we are learning to the world around us.
My Project
Our students like to cook and bake. Currently our kitchen has very limited supplies, so we are limited on how we use the kitchen. These materials including: baking and cooking supplies such as pans, bowls, utensils, and measuring cups, will allow us to stock the kitchen so that we can cook or bake when we want. The kitchen is also accessible to other exceptional children classes, so the materials will be used by many students.
During cooking activities students are learning reading, math, science, and social skills. They have to work together to follow the recipe and they are learning healthy habits. They are also learning a skill that they can use at home or find or in a job, as they grow.
This project will allow our students to take ownership of the materials they are using and to appreciate making healthy food to eat.
The more they cook or bake, the more excited they are about trying new foods. When the students come across a recipe they like, they take a copy home to share with their families.
