Bag a Book Tonight

My students need sturdy small plastic bags that they will carry their reading material home each evening.

My Students

I meet with Kindergarteners four days a week. Their homeroom teacher, assistant, and I are working on reading skills. We practice letter recognition, sound recognition, voice, print, match, sight words, and use of sight words and high frequency words to read materials at their reading level.

My school has close to 540 students from many different countries.

We have a large population of second language learners. While we have a diverse socio-economic population, many of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Our goal is to have all of our children read on grade level. We work with the foundational skills and promote thinking questions within our instructional time. We strive to support and develop our students academic strategies.

My Project

We are requesting bags for books so that our students have a safe and sturdy carrying case for their literature books each afternoon. We are promoting reading at home each day. After instructing the students with their books during language arts time, they will be able to place them in these bags and take them home to share with their families. We are then asking the children to bring the book bags back the next day to have for independent reads. We believe the more a child reads, the better they get.

We want the children to see reading as an important and special activity in their lives.

Each bag will have a child's name on it and the books are theirs for the evening. By having their own bag that is sturdy and water proof, the students will not worry about damaging their books.
