At the end of last year, I asked my students which activities and games they enjoyed the most. A large majority of them responded with the sport of badminton. I was happy to hear this because I absolutely love our badminton unit as well.
Badminton is an intense game that provides moderate to vigorous physical activity in an atmosphere that the kids love.
I am always amazed when they finish a day of games how they are sweating, breathing heavily, and talking about which teams they are going to play next class period.
I attribute our students' passion for badminton to the following 3 factors. First, they can hit the birdie as hard as they want and it often stays inbounds (which is very different from tennis). Second, they play in partners and enjoy the competitive games and tournaments. Third, it is a fairly level playing field because most of our students only have experience playing badminton during physical education classes.
Badminton is an amazing sport with high student engagement. It also allows our kids to continue getting their 60 minutes of physical activity per day. As fun as it is, the skill of hand/eye coordination is difficult for a number of our students. One thing that will help tremendously, is providing students with the option of a standard badminton racket, or a beginner one with a shorter shaft.
The beginner rackets requested in this project will help struggling students develop their skills and confidence during drills, lead-up activities, and competition.
The birdies will replace the ones that are no longer in good enough shape to use.
