Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so important to me. They are great kids who have to deal with a lot of things in their lives. They deal with things in their family and in the neighborhood that even the adults should not have to go through in their lives. Most of the students are from high poverty homes, and many are from single-parent homes.
That is why I work to get them every benefit possible that students in other areas receive because I like to find life skills that they will use outside my gym.
The students are always so appreciative. I also like to make sure they experience different exercise equipment and understand the proper form of each exercise in order for them to avoid injury. I feel like if I expose them to different types of activities they are more likely to find their favorite.
My Project
The students at my school have always been about soccer and basketball. They have even been difficult to get to try other sports. That is when I have pushed them to give other sports a try, and there have been a few that have been very successful. The funny part about it is badminton is one of the sports that the students use to not want to try.
The last couple years have been crazy because every time we do badminton the students complain but then once we start to play they have a blast.
It is a great sport for students who are maybe a little less athletic then other students. It almost levels the playing field for them, and I have also noticed my special education students have really begun to love it.
This is where you come in to help us. The racquets now have some wear and tear on them, and getting them restrung cost just as much as buying new ones. That is why I use some of the old ones to practice throwing with primary students. So, now we are quite a few short from the amount we need for a full class. If you could find a little money in your budget to help us out that would be awesome.
