Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The library at our school is working hard to encourage our students to learn for the fun of it! The majority of our girls come from economically disadvantaged households and underrepresented groups. We recognize the need to make learning an engaging experience for our girls, and they have continually shown how committed they are to setting goals and working toward them.
With hands-on learning opportunities and activities to promote creativity and individuality, we aim to help our girls smash gender stereotypes and pave the way toward academic success.
My Project
The library will be moving toward a badge system for the upcoming school year in order to promote school-wide literacy.
Students will be challenged to complete specific reading tasks to promote diverse reading and will be rewarded with unique badges they can collect.
These "badges" will be the pin-on buttons created using the pinback button sets and button making machine from American Button Machines.
Some reading tasks might include working on author Gene Yuen Lang's "Reading Without Walls" challenge, where students are tasked with reading books that a) feature a character that doesn't look or act like you, b) feature a topic you don't know about, or c) are written in a format you aren't familiar with (graphic, chapter, verse, etc.). At the end of each grading period, students can collect more prizes depending on which badges they have collected through that term.
This project will also be fun for library maker activities. Students can create pins using the button maker and button sets to express themselves and explore their own creativity.
