Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are Middle School students in a low poverty area that come from Spanish speaking families. We are constantly trying to raise their reading/writing capabilities. We practice a number of strategies, like we have our students practice reading out-loud and in groups. They also highlight keywords or phrases that stand out to them, and they write summaries so they could become more comfortable putting thoughts into paper.
The problem is that the students in 6th grade have little to no extracurricular activities.
Because of this most students lack that motivation to participate in anything being offered as a team and are easily bored.
My Project
These fun, easy to use, and most importantly safe archery sets will introduce the students to other sports out there, besides soccer (which is king, here). I will introduce my students to a sport where physical fitness is not the top priority.
This introductory sport will help the students focus, concentrate and help with their goal setting skills.
Students will learn they must overcome distractions and obstacles, and have a plan of action. This will also greatly help with accountability and classroom management. this intro to archery will be a self-challenging and rewarding activity, blending physical and mental resources. A number of skills will be used, like basic math skills are reinforced during routine scoring.
