I teach second and third grade literacy to two dynamic groups of learners in Washington state. The neighborhood represents a variety of cultures/families, all of whom are represented in our classrooms. We have students who speak multiple languages, and who have varying levels of financial need.
Excitement is the name of the game in our classroom.
Whether we are learning about poetic forms, the life cycle of the Brassica Plant, or how to read with grit, the students in my class are excited to soak up all they can.
My Project
When I see an empty book bag, a student rereading the same book for the tenth time, or a wandering student during our independent reading time, my work has begun! I have a conference with that student, and with their interests and reading level in mind, we look for some "just right" books for them to try. With kids reading anywhere from a kindergarten level to an adult level, I'm always on the look out for high interest books in a variety of levels.
A few series have become really popular lately with my students, and my list of "books we want to gobble up" has exploded with requested titles!
At the top of the current list are these three series: "Dog Man", "The Bad Guys" and "Recess Warriors". With the titles in each of these series, I will be able to keep up the love of reading in my classroom and keep my library current. The books in the "Dog Man" and "The Bad Guys" series will appeal to students reading around the second grade level, and the "Recess Warriors" books will appeal to those reading at higher levels. Thanks for considering these additions to our library!
