Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are two veteran teachers and, after a combined 45 years of teaching at this southeast community school, we are both retiring at the end of this school year. We feel extremely grateful to the neighborhood families and the students who have embraced us throughout our careers. Giving a little something back to our school before we leave is important to both of us.
The students who attend our school arrive, sometimes, hungry, sleepy, and unprepared with supplies.
They live in impoverished homes and have vary little support. Knowing 30 students will have their school supplies and backpack donated for them will help make them more successful at school.
My Project
We plan to purchase 30 student backpacks and fill them with any unused or extra school supplies we have acquired over the years. One backpack will be distributed to each of our awesome teacher colleagues. At the start of the next school year, each teacher will present the fully-stocked backpack to that one student who shows up in class with nothing (there's always one!) All students need a backpack to help them transport their homework and supplies to and from school.
Filling these backpacks with necessary school supplies and delivering them will be a labor of love for the two of us.
We feel those students, who desperately need a backpack, will feel a sense of responsibility and respect for their attendance each day at school.
Our many thank yous will be delivered this May when each teacher receives the fully equipped pack ready for the most-needy student.
