This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a school social worker in a low-income/high poverty school district, I see that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many come from single-parent homes, many have experienced homelessness and now they live in a home with multiple family members or they live in a shelter or hotel, many face hunger and many don't have a bed to sleep on at night. As a result of their circumstances, my students' parents/guardians often experience financial burdens that make it extremely difficult to pay their bills or buy food, let alone purchase back to school supplies.
Despite the many challenges they face, my students are resilient and they are eager to learn!
By providing backpacks containing essential school supplies into the hands of my students you will be giving them critical tools they need to start school with confidence and to succeed throughout the year!
My Project
I am requesting essential back to school supplies, such as student backpacks, pencils, and paper. Backpacks are essential for students to carry their homework to and from school, and they often come in handy during an unexpected move or overnight stay (for safety reasons). My students also use pencils and paper on a daily basis in the classroom for writing, drawing, thinking, vocabulary, grammar, counting, graphing, poetry, projects, science, social studies, creating something new, and assessments.
My students can't learn without these fundamental supplies!
These materials will help my hard-working and resilient students start their school-year prepared and ready to learn. Having additional supplies on hand will also help my students who may be facing unexpected life transitions have access to school supplies throughout the school year.
