My students need backpacks to carry their books and supplies. Since we have a high percentage of homelessness, they come to school without supplies and books. Teachers usually provide what they need to succeed academically.
As a special education teacher in a low socioeconomic Title I school, all the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. My class consists of 13 students. My kids are faced with many challenges in and outside the classroom. They are academically two years below grade level. Many of my students come from single-parent homes. Although my kids have varying disabilities (LD, Autism, ED and Mentally Handicapped), they are eager to learn and succeed. I want to provide an atmosphere that is safe, and welcoming. Help me engage and inspire my students by becoming a partner in their learning.
My Project
Many of our students are homeless, on the first day of school they rarely arrive at school with supplies or books. Basic supplies, notebooks etc.. are usually provided by their classroom teacher.
My students need a backpack to carry their books and supplies.
It is so difficult for students when they are homeless. When they arrive at school without notebooks, reading books, pencils and other supplies it is very difficult for them. They are usually withdrawn and angry. So providing them with their basic supplies and other items from our care closet provides them with confidence and a feeling of belonging. We still need backpacks so we can fill them with their supplies. Help us help them. A child should never have to worry about not having basic supplies to help them reach their goals.
