Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students from H. Grady Spruce High School come from the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, TX. Spruce high school serves students from challenging backgrounds. 86% of Spruce's students are classified under low socioeconomic status.This area is traditionally known for poverty and gang activity. However, there are many incredible families that live in Pleasant Grove and send their students to Spruce High School. These students deserve the right to an equal education. Many of them lack the resources for success such as backpacks and nutritional meals. The football players at Spruce are a special group. The team won a 2016 Bi-District Championship. Many of the players take the city bus to and from practice as well as sacrifice their summer vacation to participate in workouts and practice. They are truly unique among their peers and have earned the opportunity to pursue a college degree. The football team takes part in community service projects each year such as community beautification, mentoring elementary students, and serving at the North Texas Food Bank.
My Project
Our goal is to raise support to purchase a backpack for each of the student-athletes on Spruce's football team. These backpacks will help the students with organization, responsibility and academic success. Our team goal is to average a 3.0 Grade Point Average across the football program. This goal will lead to our ultimate goal of sending every football player who goes through Spruce's program for four years off to college upon graduation from high school. Student Athletes at Spruce attend tutoring sessions after school every Monday. They also receive weekly grade checks by their coaches to insure their grades are meeting college readiness standards. The backpacks will help students keep their school work organized and accountable for their supplies.
