Backpacks for Breaks

My students need backpacks to carry their school break food home on the bus. These backpacks are important in providing that our preschoolers get the food home on their bus.

My Students

As supporters of lifelong learning, our preschool and pre-kindergarten staff serves 3, 4, and 5 year old children on the west-side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Many of our families live in poverty and 50% of our children receive special education services.

We support the idea that there are items children need so they daily feel ready to learn.

Our children come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Staff provide monthly parent and family programs to support families in many ways. Many of our families work in low income jobs.

My Project

We know that well fed children will be more focused, life long learners who will become good citizens. Over our three 2-week school breaks, many of our lowest income children are not getting the food they need to stay healthy. These backpacks will help these 3, 4 and 5 year old children be able to get their food home on the buses. Of our 365 children enrolled in our preschool, 81 have been identified as living in households under 127% of poverty. These backpacks will make a difference of getting this food home to our families. The food is for 10 days for each school break so they will definitely need the backpacks to transport the food home!
