Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our high school is an inner city public school located just north of downtown Houston. We are a Title One school with over eighty percent of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. As a basketball program, we have struggled to have a lot of on-court success over the past several years. The young men’s basketball team has not made the state playoffs in almost twenty-five years. Last year we were playing good basketball but after a minor stomach surgery, turned into a major setback for me in the middle of our season, and we ended up missing the playoffs again.
Our student athletes are fighters that have shown great resilience continuing to move forward in spite of their circumstances.
Our school district has had numerous budget cuts over the years, so our athletic programs have to raise money to purchase things we need. We have already worked hard raising funds to replace our team travel sweats and pay for our tournament fees. Now I wanted to have the opportunity to replace our basketball team bags with new ones because I know that it would mean a lot to each one of my student athletes. Thanks in advance!
My Project
Being a great student athlete requires self determination, sacrifice, and confidence in yourself. These travel backpacks will enable us to look like some of the more well funded basketball programs so that my student athletes feel that they belong on the court with anybody at all times.
Our school is currently under construction so we do not have access to an athletic locker room for my student athletes to lock up their workout clothes and gear.
These backpacks will give them plenty of space to store their basketball shoes, clothes, and accessories and transport those items between games and scrimmages.
