The students in my inner-city classroom come from poor immigrant families. Over 75% of them are English language learners with all of them receiving free/reduced-price lunch. The students live in crowded apartments with parents and grandparents. Even though the majority feel they cannot help their children due to their own limited English abilities, parents still have high expectations for their children to succeed.
Learning does not always come easily to my English language learners.
Some students also have special needs to make learning even more challenging. As their kindergarten teacher, I hope to make learning as fun as possible so that the children will be outstanding students in all subject areas.
Kindergarten is the first school experience for many of my students. An important job of mine is to ensure each one of them develops good work habits that they can take with them throughout their years of schooling.
I hope to be able to give each and every one of my students a brand new backpack to inspire them to love school and put forth their best efforts.
Each school year many of my students do not have backpacks because of home financial constraints. It is heartbreaking to watch the faces of children who are disappointed because they see others with backpacks. With a new backpack, all students will hear the message that “School is important and must be taken seriously, even if they are in kindergarten.” This will be the beginning of good work habits that will lead them to success as they continue onto middle and high schools and eventually college. My students will learn good study and work skills when they organize themselves with their backpacks, giving them a better chance to excel in school.
