My school is the RALC. Any student that wants to come to RALC must meet certain criteria. Most of the population qualifies for free lunch. Many are also suffering from mental health issues. My students are survivors. They have all come from some form of hardship. Many are from dis-functional homes and environments and yet they find a way to come to school each day and try to be good citizens in our building and the community. I often see them reach out to a fellow student that is going through a difficult time and offer support and comfort. One of my students was recently abandoned by a parent who took the younger siblings and moved to California, this student survived several days by going from one friend to another. It was several days before anyone knew of the situation. During this time school was never missed. My students are very diverse, and unique, but most have never had anyone to expose them to the wonders or nature and the beauty that surrounds us. I would like to be the person that gives them these experiences
My Project
The students I teach have all had overcome adversity in their lives. They are a very diverse group of young people that have had very limited dealings with the environment around them. By funding these backpacks and tents will help me to be able to take them on an adventure of a lifetime.
During this trip the students will engage in many lessons, from identifying plant and animal life, to map and compass skills, team building, planning and budgeting for the trip.
We will also be doing stream studies of both plants, micro, and macro invertebrates and fish species. The students will have the opportunity too learn several methods of fishing for trout. This trip will allow the students to test themselves in ways that they have never encountered before. They will have to prepare physically and mentally. many of them have never been out of their home town before.
