Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our whole world changed on March 13, 2020! We are a 3rd grade class located in Compton, CA. I am so blessed that my students have access to technology provided by the school. Unfortunately, they still lack access to BASIC supplies. 100% of my class receives free breakfast and lunch. 100% of my students come from minority backgrounds.
The 2020-2021 school year is still so unknown, but I know that my students will rise to the challenges.
Students are logging in to distance learning each day, and are trying so hard to continue the progress that they have made through the first two-thirds of the school year.
My Project
Whether we return to the classroom in August, or continue Distance Learning, I want to provide my students with backpacks full of the necessary supplies so that whether we are in school or home they can participate fully in learning. I learned in the spring that students did not want to spend the day tied to the computer screen and keyboard. If we continue distance learning, I will prepare interactive notebook packets for students to use that correspond with my lessons.
If we are going to continue distance learning, I want it to be as close to in class instruction as it could be.
That includes Interactive Notebooks, small group lessons, live lessons. I don't want all assignments to be strictly based in our Google Classroom applications, but to stretch beyond that. In addition, students still need practice cutting, gluing and writing between the lines. These materials will help with those assignments.
In the event that the school opens, then I need to minimize the sharing of materials and students will need individual supplies and these will come in handy then as well. I hope that by giving the drawstring bag and pencil pouch that students will be able to keep their materials organized.
