Each day in my classroom is a new adventure. I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of students ages 7-12 with a varying range of special needs. My students face challenges in the areas of cognition, speech, motor, visual, hearing, social and/or behavioral skills. Many are also directly impacted by Autism or Sensory Processing Disorders. This influences how they interpret and interact with the world around them. Their unique viewpoint has changed who I am as both a teacher and a parent. They challenge me to provide them with access to meaningful experiences and curriculum that will allow them to grow as future world citizens.
My students inspire and guide our classroom team as we work together to learn academic, social, and life skills.
We are a unique family that works together to meet each daily challenge head-on. No task is too large and no victory is too small. We love continually learning from our students as they show us the true meaning of perseverance.
My Project
Some projects are difficult to write. As educators, we strive to make our classrooms a place of safety, warmth, and encouragement. We understand that, in order to focus and excel, students must have their basic daily needs met. When a student is impacted by homelessness, their daily struggle goes far beyond the academic lessons. The unknown daily factors that impact them are often beyond comprehension. Though each evening brings uncertainty, I have witnessed students be strong beyond their years as they still come into the classroom with a smile, happy to be at school, and eager to learn.
By creating "Backpack Buddy" nutrition bags, I hope to ease the stress of the unknown during weekends and/or holidays away from school.
The materials requested would be assembled into backpack nutrition packs that would help supplement meals/snacks during time away from school. I specifically chose items that will provide an array of nutrition, are kid-friendly and would be easy to prepare with minimal materials. I also chose items that are shelf-stable / require no consistent refrigeration. Although I cannot erase the stress that the experience of homelessness brings, it is my hope that the addition of nutrition packs will decrease some of the unknown when school is not in session.
