Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach all subjects in a second grade classroom at a Title I school in East San Jose, California. Over 85% of our students are eligible for free lunch. The majority of our students are English Language Learners.
This year, seven of my twenty second grade students are below first grade proficiency learners. Most of my students are second language learners. To help increase our students' literacy school-wide, we ask each student to read at home for thirty minutes each night. However, many of my students do not have any books at home.
The goal of the "Backpack Books" program is to provide my students with appropriate, engaging books to increase both their fluency and reading comprehension levels. Funding would provide each of my students with a clear plastic tote bag to transport books safely and a wide variety of high-interest books to take home every week. Additionally, I will be able to use this resource with future classes.
My students are bright, curious, and motivated. They enjoy school and learning. A lifelong love for reading is an enormous asset for any child. Developing a passion for reading will enable them to continue to achieve academically and increase their options for exploring the world and using the many gifts they possess.
