Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want every one of my students to feel successful when they finish fourth grade. I want them to have the tools (supplies) they need to do their best on every assignment or project. Our biggest challenge is budget cuts! Our supply budget has been cut to the bone and we will be without basic supplies.
My students are eager to learn and thirsty for knowledge!
They love to do projects and work hard when they are challenged. Our school is in a high poverty area of the city and most of our families struggle every day just to provide the basics. We are a Title 1 school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch every day. Many of these students rely on the school to provide more than just their education. They receive breakfast and lunch at school, clothing, shoes, backpacks, coats, and other necessities. Most students arrive at school with no supplies at all. Our families can't afford to contribute even pencils or tissues in the classroom. It is often difficult for the school to meet all the needs of all the students.
My Project
These materials will allow my students the basics tools they need to be productive students. The children will be able to focus on the learning at hand instead of spending valuable time searching for erasers, crayons, or scissors to complete an assignment. Having classroom supplies will also relieve the embarrassment that some children experience when their families can't afford to buy them pencils, scissors, or paper for school. We will be able to use these materials across the curriculum! They are needed for reading response projects, writing assignments, math practice, art pieces, and science experiments. There are a lot of 'behind the scene' supplies that are needed for a classroom to be transformed into a productive learning environment.
