This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a public high school neighboring a large city. Most students in the school qualify for free and reduced meals. My students receive special education support in their general education classes for a variety of disabilities such as ADHD, specific learning disabilities, emotional, hearing, and/or vision impairments. All of my students are on a diploma track which may or may not include vocational training in addition to exposure to a college-prep curriculum. Students with disabilities make up 14% of our total student population. They need all of the support they can get.
My Project
This project will provide 4 science classes with new dry erase markers and a chemistry class with new calculators. Classroom supplies wear out and teachers cannot afford to replace them. The multi-colored markers will help my students with disabilities as teachers group by color and use them to highlight text or pictures they draw as they teacher. Calculators will help all students but those with math disabilities will benefit the most. Teaching can be exhausting when trying to teach to all learning styles and deficits. The last thing teachers need to worry about is whether they start the year with appropriate supplies.
