Mrs. Small from Bronx NY is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need basic supplies for our theater classroom including glue, colored tape for staging, scissors, double sided tape for mounting, chalkboard paper, chalk markers and index cards to create simple sets for classroom performances.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are a vibrant ensemble who seek opportunities to collaborate and work as an ensemble. They are advocates for change and love deeply, even throughout their own challenges. I teach 14 classes across grades 3-5. The make up of my students include English Language Learners (ELL), Students with Disabilities (SWD), students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEP's), the Gifted and the Talented. I am blessed to have the privilege to teach and learn from them.
I am proud to say that I teach the most creative and lively students in the city.
This Spring 2019, we will be producing Hairspray Jr., a musical that encourages integration and acceptance of other cultures. Our past shows include The Wiz Jr and Annie Jr. Our musical productions are comprised of only 1/10 of our student population. Consequently, I am introducing a new performance model entitled "Theater in the Class", where parents and select classes within the school community are invited to view live theater performances in our classroom.
The "Theater in the Class" performance model will ensure that more students have access to the resources acquired through donor's choose. Furthermore, it will increase the number of students performing in school productions from 60 to about 300, as there will be about 14 classes participating in "Theater in the Class." This year, I would like for my students to use these resources to create costumes, set pieces and props for our classroom productions.
The colored tape will be used to teach students how to block/stage scenes and where to place prop and set pieces.
The scissors, index cards, glue, pens and pencils will be used for planning and for simple prop pieces. The other materials will also be used for creating simple set pieces and/or "remodeling" old set pieces. For example, the chalkboard contact paper will be used to cover an old file cabinet, that will be designed for a scene using the chalk markers, and then erased using the chalk marker Spray, to provide a clean slate for the next production/scene.
