My Students

Our students are a clever and motivated group of 4th graders. There are 56 students in our grade, including 4 ELLs who are learning English and 8 more ELLs further developing their English. Our classrooms are very diverse, with many cultures, languages, and ethnicities. We all work together like a community, making sure everybody is learning, involved, and feels welcome. Our students never cease to amaze me with their ingenuity and imagination. Just the other day we had an in class "field trip" to an art gallery following a person in an article we had recently read. I asked my students what other in class field trip ideas could they come up with. They had endless ideas like a technology demonstration of a new piece of technology, or the evolution of a known piece of technology, a Zoo-on-the-go visit, a climate based art gallery, a dinosaur exhibit, a video game exhibit with research stations, or a science exhibit with various stations. They are truly a gifted group of kids.

My Project

When spring break was over and we had barely any pencils, erasers, glue sticks, or a working pencil sharpeners, I knew the next year couldn't struggle like that. I felt so guilty as I sent students to other classrooms, hoping their pencil sharpener was still functional. I was pleading for parents to send in glue sticks, markers, and paper. There was nothing left in the school's supply closet, yet we had so much more work to do and my students were still growing and learning everyday. Not this upcoming year. The upcoming 3rd graders will be equipped!

My students deserved better than losing precious instructional time scoping for another student who still had a mechanical hand sharpener that was sharper than a butter knife.

One of the biggest struggles this year was the hunt for a working pencil sharpener. We had burned through a heavy duty electric sharpener by December. It was replaced by a light duty sharpener that only lasted until early March. Three industrial sharpeners may sound unnecessary, but again, I will not allow a lack of basic supplies get in the way of student learning.

There was a project in April we were working on to display their learning of equivalent fractions. It was adorable. A total Pinterest steal! Something to take home to their parents and say, "hey, look mom and dad at what I've learned and created!" It was simple, a star that had the simplest form of the fraction in the middle and on the 5 points had an equivalent fraction, in a colorful 8-page book. This was great, until I realized my classroom of 29 students had dwindled down to 2 glue sticks. And the embarrassing phone calls to other classrooms began. (Thanks again kindergarten!)
