My students need phonics activity programs, a Chromebook, and listening center for extra practice in phonemic awareness and manipulating words.

The second grade students in my class are eager and ready to learn. The students have a wide array of interests and academic abilities. Their reading levels range from pre-k students to third grade but they all have a desire to read. The frustration they display from not being able to read is heart breaking.
The greatest gift is a passion for reading, but how do you give a student access and level the playing field?
"Technology". How do you bridge the gap with a lack of resources? Our school is located in a low socioeconomic, urban area. Many of our students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Many of the families live in apartments with multiple families in one unit. The odds are stacked against them. Using technology as a resource will give the students a fighting chance.
The students will benefit from increased exposure to phonics and word manipulation. In a perfect world, all the students would be on the same level and little differentiating would be necessary. Unfortunately, it is impossible to give the kids as much exposure needed to truly eliminate the deficits the students have.
Technology and additional student centered activities will increase student gains significantly.
The Listen and Learn Phonics Activity Program will provide a method of teaching the students to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters in the alphabet. The actual listening center will give us a means for using the listen and learn phonics activity program as well as listening to books on CD as a way to model good reading. The Word Work Center activity will allow the kids to have hands-on activities to manipulate words and increase their vocabulary. The Chromebook would create an additional work center for students to access instructional websites that will meet each student at their learning level and style.
