Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of cultural, economic, and social backgrounds. My school is classified as an urban middle school.

Over 80% of the students in my school are on free or reduced lunch, and about one in four students receive English Language Learning services.

The diversity of the students brings many perspectives and angles to the classroom. However, the economic disadvantages can be limiting and hinder students who do not have resources outside of the classroom. These students can benefit and advance from the opportunity to use a variety of educational resources and learning modalities. Yet, the finances do not allow for that to be available in many cases. In many cases, a lot of my students cannot afford basic school supplies to begin the school year. The transition to middle school can be difficult for a lot of students and not being prepared causes added stress.

Many of my students are coming into sixth grade reading well below grade level. This causes students to be disengaged and not passionate about reading. A lot of students also have a hard time choosing just-right books.

My Project

Many of my students need basic school supplies like notebooks, pencils, erasers, and pencil sharpeners. It is difficult for many families to provide these basic school supplies for their children. I want to ensure that no class time is wasted because students don’t have basic supplies to write with or a notebook to write in.

To start the school year on a positive note, I would like to have a classroom set of basic supplies that is available for all of my students to use.

We write every single day in my class. Supplying simple materials such as notebooks, pencils, erasers, and pencil sharpeners will ensure that everyone can participate and have the tools to complete their work. The desk organizers will also allow extra materials to be held at every cluster of desks so students can easily use what they need and not roam around the classroom looking for simple materials to get started. I like to allow flexible seating for my students, which permits them to get up and move around the room. Clipboards will help students work anywhere in the room and provide a solid surface to write on. I like to use multiple teaching techniques within my classroom. Speakers assist my auditory learners, while also allowing me to include technology in my lessons. We frequently watch videos, listen to audiobooks, watch tutorials, and much more. These speakers will ensure that all of my students can hear what is being played. Students will use these supplies throughout the school year and not have to worry about not being able to provide some of these materials. This can take an added pressure off of a student and allow them to focus on learning!
