I am a new teacher about to embark on an incredible journey with students that have severe disabilities. I have ten students and five are in wheel chairs, and only one student is verbal. We do a lot of task analysis in my classroom, and are in need of materials to use on a day to day basis.
It takes a lot to teach children with disabilities, but at the same time it is one of the most rewarding jobs.
My students surprise me everyday, and each day is a new adventure. I teach severe and profound special education students in a self-contained classroom. They are joy to teach, and it is wonderful to watch them finally learn and retain a skill even if is something small like throwing away their trash. As a teacher, you get excited about the little things. My students are high school students with a wide range of multiple disabilities, and because of that my students require a lot of one-on-one instruction.
My Project
My students main goals focus on self-help, living, and fine motor skills. These type skills will help my students to be as independent as possible, and will help them become successful individuals. The sorting materials I have requested will help students with their fine motor skills. The weather sorter will teach students how to dress for the various types of weather as well as the seasons. The counting boxes will help to enhance my students math skills that they will need to have if they get a job. All of these materials will offer hands on learning for my students.
Your generosity will not only enhance my classroom and help educate my students with severe needs, but it will also help teach them how to become independent.
These children are extremely deserving and ready to dive in.
