My students are eager and inquisitive learners who work collaboratively in groups to learn about Ancient Civilizations, from the beginning of human history to the Renaissance and Reformation movement. I teach at a large middle school in Charlotte, NC with diverse students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our rising 6th grade class has over 400 students, many of whom have never taken a formal social studies class. For social studies students are grouped in mixed ability classes with a variety of learning levels and goals. I am thrilled for the opportunity to engage students in learning about history and thinking about how the past relates to the present.
My Project
With a brand new school year up and coming, this Donors Choose project will help bring my classroom the supplies it needs.
For school supplies, I have included tissues, disinfecting wipes, pencil erasers, earbuds, sharpened pencils, and colored pencils.
Sharpened pencils are a big one for my classroom! When students do not have the materials they need to learn they become a distraction to themselves and other students. In order to help my entire class stay focused and keep learning flowing I have a community chest full of pencils where students can grab a pencil before class begins. Students keep the pencil so they are prepared for the rest of their classes throughout the day. With 160 different students who pass through my classroom, many germs end up on desks. To keep my room clean and germ free we use disinfecting wipes. For when students get sick, we will need lots tissues. Students also use earbuds for a variety of personal learning activities; I included a bulk set for students to use in case they do not have any. We use colored pencils for a variety of projects, including coloring a world map at the beginning of the year. I have boxes of colored pencils and markers for each table, but will need to resupply these for this year.
To give students more flexible opportunities for seating I have two floor tables where students can sit or kneel. To make these tables more comfortable for this project I have included two rugs to put under each table and seat cushions for students to sit or kneel on. I have also included a vacuum so we can keep classroom rugs clean!
