Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been a general music teacher in a metropolitan school district for 13 years, and for the past 4 years I have been fortunate to teach at a middle school. I am excited to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.

I am dedicated to teaching and to providing my students with opportunities to create, compose, and improvise on classroom instruments and using technology.

In my general music classes I teach over 950 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8, and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income. Students participate in musical activities ranging from electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles, to world percussion where students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa.

My Project

I teach at a school with some of the most creative and kind students I have ever taught, yet the beginning of the year is especially challenging for some students. In addition to the excitement and sometimes stress about being back to school, moving up a grade, and seeing friends again, there is the challenge of obtaining school supplies. Due to factors beyond their control, some of my students and their families are unable to contribute school supplies to the operation of the classroom at the start of the year.

I hope to make the transition into the new year as smooth as possible by obtaining basic health supplies and school supplies through DonorsChoose so my classroom is a healthy, clean place and students are able to effectively learn.

I am requesting basic cleaning supplies, folders, and pencils so the classroom can be kept clean and so students always have basic supplies in the classroom so they are able to access learning materials. Thank you for your kind donation to this project; it will make the classroom a more comfortable place and students will be better able to focus on creating and learning about music.
