Back to School Safely with Protection From Covid19 Spread
Help me give my students a contactless thermometer kiosk that identifies approaching individuals and determines their facial temperature, as well as, whether they have facial coverings, to provide safety and peace of mind as students return to school.
If you plan for one year, plant kalo. If you plan for ten years, plant koa. If you plan for a hundred years, teach the children." - Olelo Noeʻau, Kawena Pukui
Mobilizing youthsʻ energy and commitment is essential to achieving a more peaceful world!
My learners have had many obstacles to overcome even before this worldwide pandemic, and are adjusting to this new learning experience with resilience, doing their best during this challenging time to continue their learning journeys. They are primarily Native Hawaiians and students of color, who are apathetic, but inquisitive, often defiant, yet easily depressed, with a majority of them from poverty. Many of our students’ parents cannot afford a temperature taking tool to determine whether their child should stay at home or go to school. Some students have fears of being around people again. But, while at home, they are losing valuable skills each day because the instruction they receive online is not what is best for them. Since last school year, we have been distance learning; however, the plan is to return back to by face-to-face instruction in January for our 3rd quarter. Help me give them comfort upon their return with proper safety protocols.
My Project
Schools provide more than just academics to children. In addition to reading, writing and math, students learn social and emotional skills, get exercise and access to mental health support and other things that are challenging to provide with distance learning. For many families, school is where kids get healthy meals, access to the internet, and other vital services. Blended learning is about to begin. This means that teachers and students will be in the classroom together. We believe that by taking the appropriate measures for safety first in our classroom, we will be safe and thrive. But we need to make sure that COVID19 guidelines are followed.
To assure that all in-person learners meet state guidelines for Covid-19 safety protocols, a contactless temperature checker, face mask verifier and facial recognizing kiosk can support us by identifying students and staff with high temperatures without requiring physical contact upon entry.
The non-contact kiosks automatically reads temperatures in ~ 1 second, and carries out contactless temperature checks for students and faculty to identify abnormal temperatures. A green light indicates that temperatures are within a normal range, and a red light and audible alarm indicates that the person has a high temperature. The alarm will allow us to assess the problem without having any contact. Contact tracing and track and trace is made easy as the device holds real-time logs of entry times and temperature readings.
This device will help out tremendously, as we cannot have children or staff coming to school sick with the Covid19 virus or flu, making it impossible to social distance safely. Only healthy children can learn!. Not only the students will benefit from this tool; it has a cascading effect on the entire school building and its inhabitants. Faculty and students are spared unwanted, possibly fatal, illness.
