This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember how bored you were when your teacher shoved a dusty, bland, gray book in front of you and demanded that you read? My scholars need books that are known for engaging students, and hands-on materials to help them comprehend text.
My scholars are all African American boys.
Their guardians have chosen for them to attend a charter school for boys that caters to their gender specific needs. Although they are from a low socioeconomic community they are surrounded by the love and care of families that selected our school for them, and a staff that works extended hours beyond other local public schools. The staff specializes in boy’s education. We understand that boys learn with engaging materials and hands-on projects. They usually can't be told the lesson. They have to be interested in what they are learning and physically feel the lesson in order to understand it.
My Project
The books on the supply list are proven to be some of the best tools for capturing the attention of young minds. Walking in the Jungle will help the scholars with rhyming skills and The Mitten is good for developing sequencing skills. My Parents Think I am Sleeping works well with choral reading and will therefore assist struggling readers.
After reading students will use felt to make quilts that depict the characters in the story. In addition they might act out the plot of the story with farm animals or puppets. This will help with their comprehension skills.
Without the proper tools my scholars simply will not learn.
Research shows that most boys are hands-on learners. They become victims in a school system that can’t afford the interesting materials and hands-on projects they need to learn. Our school was founded to combat the cycle of victimization suffered by African American boys in the city we service. In order to stay true to our mission, however, we need the proper tools.
