Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach K-5 Art in a Title I School. Our students are respectful and kind. So many of them come to school ready to learn. We are fortunate because our students get to have Art, PE and Music classes, we call it “Specials”. And the children love it. When we talk about the favorite part of the school day “Specials” they say. Our classes offer our students opportunities they might not otherwise get outside of the school day. As many of our parents often work 2 jobs just to make ends meet.
Opportunities to create are the foundation for success in our world today.
Because our school has over 80% Free and Reduced Lunch our parents aren’t able to financially support our school as much as they would like. Our school doesn’t have a parent organization that does fundraising, all fundraising is done through the school and staff. This is the challenge we face.
My Project
The supplies provided with this project will help provide our students with the same quality of materials that the more affluent schools have with better funding. With my limited budget these materials are out of reach.
I am excited to try some liquid watercolor techniques with the students that I learned about during a district professional development session.
We will be able to create stronger and brighter backgrounds when working with silhouette paintings, collage and wax resist paintings. These materials combined with some basic household items have a stunning effect. Salt, wax paper and rubbing alcohol are just a few of the common household items we will use.
