I teach in a low-income school district, where most of our students come from single-parent homes. The students in my building face the struggle of attending school daily without having the supplies and the basic understanding of how to be successful in the classroom. Our students want to learn and be successful but often need help in the areas of academics and social skills. My students specifically are students who qualify for special services based on their multiple learning handicaps.
The students are faced with many challenges outside of the classroom.
They often have to watch their siblings after school because of their parent(s) working late, are responsible for taking care of their homes, and may participate in after-school activities. Many of our students do not have access to healthy and clean food for meals and snacks. The students want to do better but need guidance and support in all areas of their life to be able to learn the skills necessary to get out of the cycle of poverty.
My Project
My students need pens and pencils to help them get their work done. They have been working so hard, but we are running out of basic supplies. I work in a low-income district and many of my students come to school without​ basic necessities at home so they definitely don't have basic school necessities. Staying healthy is a necessity since many of them do not have health insurance. This requires tissues, hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes.
Pencils are necessary for completing work and avoiding wasted class time trying to locate materials.
The materials will be given to students to ensure they have what they need to complete classwork and homework in all subjects . My students will not have to worry about borrowing or waiting to use from others. I can ensure the day begins with each student ready to learn and to demonstrate their thinking and written work with having the supplies they need.
The coloring items, glue and tape will allow the students to create visual aids My students struggle to learn new concepts so they often need to draw images to help them learn.
