We are a school located near Tampa Bay in Florida with a high poverty rate. We serve 2,200 students! We are a performing arts public charter school. I encourage, teach, and mentor my students through the arts.
Artsy people are unique and beautiful people to be near; they inspire others to do, think about, and become more than they already are.
I teach Earth and space science as well as an advanced critical thinking class to middle school students. My students are eclectic and artistic. They are preteens and teens full of ambition and emotions. They are sensitive, smart, sweet, and talented. Many are very humorous, and some are insecure and looking for a safe place to just be themselves.
Most of my students ride the bus for long periods of time just to get here. Our school serves students breakfast, lunch, and free dinner. Many students are at school from 8 am until long after 5 pm due to after-school activities provided to them. Our school is their home away from home.
My Project
It is "that" time of year! Back to school begins a frantic search for school supplies for my students and my classroom. I serve 150 kids, so even purchasing a pencil and binder for every student adds up. The beginning of the year can be a difficult time of year to be a teacher, financially.
When there are so many needs that it can feel overwhelming to start the year off right.
Having a severe glare on my whiteboard is a problem that can be easily fixed with the requested black-out curtains and tension rods requested. Last year I propped up black poster board in the windows, but they would inevitably fall down. I want kids to be able to see the board easily! The paper will be used by kids when we create interactive science notebook pages. Post-it wall pads allow kids to work collaboratively to show their work. The printer toner will allow for kids to print off multiple copies for reader's theater in science. The binders and pencils will be given out to students who need them. The organizers will help students know where everything belongs and help to contain paper chaos right from the start of the year.
Your support would certainly be tremendously appreciated and such a fantastic relief at a stressful and frazzled time of the school year!
