Help me give my students access to basic supplies we use everyday such as chart/dry erase markers, folders and colored paper for small group activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in the Armour Square neighborhood on the southeast side of Chicago. Our school has a rich history and culture where even two staff members have returned to join the staff after graduating as teachers.
My students, while culturally diverse (68 % Asian, 15% Black, 11% Hispanic and 6% White) are very inclusive and supportive of one another in the classroom.
My students are inquisitive by nature and really shine during science class when allowed to work in groups. Eighty percent of our school is considered low-income and forty-one percent are considered English language learners and so it is critical to have instructional materials and supports to help them be successful. With me as an advocate for them and proper supports, they can continue to succeed and flourish.
My Project
As student scientists we spend a lot of time working in small groups and explaining our ideas to others. Very often in class students use posters as a way to explain ideas they learn in class and they need markers of various sizes to complete this work. Once posters are done, students often go around and provide feedback to help improve work which is where the use of fine tip markers and post-it notes come in handy. I'm always impressed by the ideas students can create while working together. There thinking truly becomes visual through collaboration!
With easy access to supplies students can focus on further development or critique of ideas and not worry about finding the supplies to accomplish this work.
I never want my students to worry about supplies when they are working as it gets in the way of their creative flow. Who knows which student will be able to explain how certain traits become more common in a species, or how rocks constantly change through the rock cycle. Giving students the opportunity to organize ideas and work together is key and having supplies on hand will certainly help!
