Back to School Basics

My students need pencils, whiteboards markers, and more to actively engage and participate in all facets of 4th grade learning.

My Students

My students come from a poverty-stricken agricultural community.

Here, many of them struggle with English as a second language, group homes, and financial hardships that many of us cannot imagine.

They are faced with a world of can’t.

Despite their hurdles, all of my 4th graders come to school with smiles and are eager to learn. We spend our class budget on basic supplies that my students and their families are unable to provide.

We start our day with a class promise. This promise is to each other, as we work collaboratively in our shared learning environment. In our room, we learn to take both academic and personal risks without fear of failure. Our focus is on a growth mindset. While we have paper and pencils, I want my students to experience more. I want my students to have a safe place that they can call their own. Here not only are their needs met, but their learning flows through active engagement and limitless creativity. We end each day with our mantra "I deserve the education I get here. I was someone when I got here, and I leave a better person."

My Project

We will be using the the materials such as pencils, whiteboard markers, and more for the basics of learning, but we won't stop there. Not only will we take notes and learn to write metaphors, but we will also write a play, draw science pop up books, and much more. These activities will allow us to focus on the engagement and make education fun. Inflatable and foam dice will be used for small group games and whole class participation during math and science.

Just because our students have less does not mean they deserve less.

The basics like the hanging pockets will be for students completing math facts, organizing enrichment work, and preparing for the next math topics. Ziploc bags and the storage organizing drawers will be used to hold supplies and keep their art materials ready for the next day. We use everything from oil pastels to clay in our learning but have to keep it organized and safe to make sure the supplies we have from previous donors will last all school year. Nameplate sleeves are key for students to hold their nameplate, but for some it will also hold a number line, a cursive alphabet, their schedule for their support teachers, and leadership roles for the week.

Hands-on learning requires supplies, and sharing with 4 or 5 other classmates just isn't easy when you are trying to do your best. Help us kick off this school year the right way. We just need the basics and a whole lot of motivation!
