My Students
My students are hardworking, highly motivated children from low-income households who would benefit from additional resources that they are deprived of due to socioeconomic status. In order to promote engagement and culturally relevant pedagogy in the classroom, which will in turn increase reading fluency and comprehension in my department, I am aiming to infuse reading into my classroom with a new collection of tablets, electronics, supplies and textbooks with material that is relevant to my students and that encompasses subjects such as science and STEM. "Reading proficiency in elementary school is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. However, more than 80% of low-income children miss this important milestone." Due to their environment, 90% of my students will not have the basic materials that they need to be successful in the classroom. Students constantly ask for materials such as pencils and paper because they cannot afford it themselves. Due to these monetary limitations, many of these students entered my class struggling to pass their grade. If given a fair shot and equal resources as their peers, my students can thrive and overcome these obstacles and help close this educational gap.
My Project
Help me stock my classroom with the essentials in order to kickstart student learning and engagement. Basic supplies like anchor charts, sharpeners and pens will allow me to provide a basic foundation in my classroom and infuse my lessons with handmade visual aids and charts to help captivate and engage students. Positive and motivating decor will motivate and reignite my students while basics like sharpeners and staplers will make sure they always have the basic tools they need for day to day lessons and activities. Additionally, anchor charts will allow me to accompany my lessons with visual aids to reach all kinds of learners.
