This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a Pre-K through eighth-grade traditional school that offers various programs to support students' social and academic success. It is the first program to offer instruction in Mandarin Chinese. Students in grades Pre-K through eight receive Mandarin language instruction for thirty minutes each day. This coursework also increases students' global understanding of various Asian cultures and their influence on the global community. Our school also houses the International Newcomer Center (INC), a program that serves recently arrived middle school refugee students. In this program, students learn academic content while simultaneously acquiring the English language.
Each day, I start out with a hug, handshake or high-five from every one of my students, and greet them by their name, so they feel welcomed and valued as an individual and member of my class.
My students will break your heart with their life stories, yet bring a smile to your face and brighten your day. They are filled with a spirit like no other, despite any odds already against them, what they wear, or how they learn. Many come to school not only hungry for a good breakfast but also with a hunger for learning, stability and a structured day!
My Project
Although I provide a student centered, hands-on, interactive environment for my kindergarten students, they are just beginning to learn to read and write and need pencils, writing paper and clipboards to gain the skills needed to do so.
So many skills are learned through the writing process including fine motor, reading, drawing and much more.
My students need a variety of pencils that offer the proper grip that work best for individual students to build strength in their fingers and hands.
Students can learn in so many ways, but without the basic supplies of paper and pencils in the classroom and at home, a student's learning potential is limited. My students love learning and deserve every possible opportunity to express themselves through writing, drawing and journaling!
