My students need basic school supplies to start off the new school year. They need pens, pencils, markers, erasers, glue sticks, colored pencils and more.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm proud to say that I work at the school that I attended as a child. It is a high poverty, Title I school in New York City. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My class contains all the current first grade ENL students in our school. Our students are faced with many challenges inside and outside the classroom. They struggle personally and academically. Thirty percent of our students receive Special Education services. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are happy, hard-working and motivated to learn.
My goal is to make my students' school environment comfortable and their learning experiences creative and challenging to prepare them for greatness.
When students enter my classroom, I want them to know that they are safe from the outside world so they can focus on learning.
My Project
My school is located in a high poverty area. We serve families that are new to the country and those that live in homeless shelters. After using all their resources for food and shelter, some families have nothing left for school supplies.
Every child looks forward to having a brand new pencil case filled with supplies!
It's important that children feel they fit in with their peers. The items included in this project (pencil cases, crayons, pencils, pens, markers, glue) will ensure that none of my students are without basic supplies to start the new year. These items will be used by students daily throughout all subject areas including reading, writing and math. Even in first grade students are given the freedom to choose their writing tool. Young students use crayons and markers for art of course but they also use them during prewriting; they draw a picture to generate writing ideas. They begin labeling their drawings with words and later write sentences. As part of our word study, the children are cutting, pasting, coloring and writing sight words every day to create an interactive notebook. The cases will keep each students' supplies organized and easily accessible for them to use throughout the day. Keeping track of their own supplies will also teach them to be responsible students. Please consider donating to this project to put a smile on some little kiddie faces.
