My students are hard-working, respectful young people in a tight-knit rural farming community in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. While our area is considered to be high-poverty, we all look out for one another and strive to take care of those in need.
I am blessed to teach in a wonderful, familial town in which our school serves as the true center of the community.
Our community is so proud of our school, and that is contagious. Family, community, and pride are three words that come to mind anytime I think about this place.
I teach English and Spanish, and am continually impressed by my students' integrity, character, and determination.
My Project
School supplies are something that many of us take for granted; I know I never had to wonder if I would have what I needed for class, and I usually even had some fun, pretty supplies. (Lisa Frank, anyone?)
Unfortunately, for many students, the reality is that the budget is simply too tight to get supplies for all the kids in the family.
All the teachers I know do what we can to help, but schools and teachers don't have unlimited resources either. These basic school supplies will help my students even the playing field, so to speak. Everyone deserves to have pencils when they head to class.
With these materials, our classroom will be able to run smoothly all year. Markers will allow us to "Chalk Talk" on the board-- a fun discussion starter! Pencils, glue sticks, scissors, printer ink, and folders will help us create interactive learning notebooks, student-centered tools for studying and engaging with information. Finally, tissues and sanitizing wipes will help us make it through the winter with as few sick absentees as possible. All of these things allow me to focus on my job-- teaching students who are present and engaged.
