Our students are very much like those around the nation-they enjoy being with friends, earning good grades, being part of a loving family, and being accepted.
Many students within our school have underlying dynamics that hamper their ability to fully enjoy aspects of life so many of us take for granted, including foundational garments.
Loving grandparents and great-grandparents, along with other family members, have taken the role of raising many of our students. Though they are loved and supplied with essentials, many lack adequate supplies.
Approximately 50% of our students receive either free or reduced meals. These numbers correlate directly to underlying needs for basic items.
Just a few months ago, I opened a Clothing Closet in the school where I teach. At the time, I did not anticipate the extreme need for the undergarments. Though I am able to take care of clothing needs through community donations, I need to supply students with undergarments, with the most needed items being brassieres. What prompted me to ask for financial assistance was what I witnessed when girls in need tried on prom dresses from the also just opened school's prom room. They came out of the dressing rooms to show me the gowns and I was appalled and saddened by the fraying, pinned, and outstretched conditions of just the parts of the brassieres I could see. I will also use a small portion of the funds to purchase brassieres appropriate for prom gowns (transparent straps, convertible, etc.).
