This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach Forensic Science to 9th and 12th graders at a high-poverty, minority, urban high school. The focus of my class is the application of science to the "real-world" and this application is best learned through labs and other hands-on activities.
This first semester, we have not been able to complete as many labs as I had hoped. Although we have completed a couple of labs this year (which is not adequate to accomplish our class goals), they have been limited by materials that I am able to bring from home or purchase out of pocket. We have very limited supplies at our school. These limitations extend to even the most basic items such as beakers, graduated cylinders, pipets, and even thermometers.
My students are very visual and kinesthetic learners. They learn much better from seeing and doing than simply looking at their notes and pictures. In addition, these learning experiences elicit an unprecedented sense of curiosity and questioning from my students. These materials will lay the foundation for many years of lab work and activities. My students need a variety of basic lab equipment including beakers, thermometers, solution bottles, graduated cylinders, and more to perform lab experiments. They can be adapted to any lab experience.
You will make it possible for my students, and many future students, to enjoy the natural curiosity that science and experimentation arouses in all people. With your donation, you will provide the necessary materials for a science lab that will allow students to flourish.
