Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our music room is a safe and fun place where my students make music together. They walk into the room, I grab my ukulele, and we sing hello to each other. Despite challenges they might have, I want my students to find comfort in music.
I teach every class in our school from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade, nearly a total of 500 students, at a Title I elementary school in Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York City.
Many of my students come from a Hispanic background. For most of them, our music class is the only opportunity for their music lessons. Therefore, I want to make our time together as meaningful as possible.
Our school maintains relatively small class sizes, and that enables teachers to give more tailored instruction, but this is a factor which contributes to a tight budget. In addition, a lot of students come from low-income families. Nevertheless, I am determined to do my best not to let those factors stand in the way of my students getting the resources they deserve. I hope to provide them with the right tools and opportunities through the support here at DonorsChoose.org.
My Project
Through this project, I hope to acquire various basic classroom materials for our music classroom. These items include paper (e.g., card stock, construction paper), writing instruments and related items (e.g., colored pencils, lead refills, erasers).
We need to restock some of these items such as construction paper and laminating pouches, and we also need some new items such as colored pencils.
All these classroom classics like construction paper and colored pencils will help me prepare fun-filled lessons, and therefore, they will help my students engage more effectively.
As a second year music teacher at my school, I have been slowly and surely figuring out what materials help us and thus what we need. It is important to secure newly needed materials and to keep basic supplies in stock so that my students can have a smooth learning experience.
