My class is a diverse group of individuals. Our school is in the center of a small city. My students are made up of Native American, Hispanic, African American, Hmong, and Caucasian backgrounds. All of my students receive free breakfast, lunch, and healthy snacks due to their socioeconomic status. Several are part of the backpack program, which sends food home with students for the weekend. The majority of them have multiple adverse childhood experiences.
Despite these factors, my students are a creative, resilient, interesting, and kind group of individuals.
They are a pleasure to know and instruct.
My Project
Many students in our building have socio-economic challenges and replacing school supplies is often difficult or impossible. Due to this challenge, we are often dependent on donations or the teachers at our school purchase the supplies ourselves. We are also finding that our needs have evolved.
These replacement supplies will be used to alleviate the stress my students' families feel to provide supplies they need during the school year.
The requested Expo markers are to replace the most used item in our classroom. Every student in our class uses dry erase markers every day. We are creating our own story problems, drawing models, and solving the problems. We also use them to complete word work and make science models.
Students have found their math notebooks extremely valuable to aid their math understanding. We would love to use this valuable organizational tool in our Language Workshop. We are hoping to be able to aid our students' organization and academic achievement by using these three subject notebooks for students' grammar work and differentiated and universal word work. Work will have a logical order, be in one place, and can be easily referenced when needed.
Students also need replacement pens, pencils, and lead for use at school and home. The stapler and tape dispenser will be used for student use within the classroom.
