Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a public middle school that serves predominantly low income students on the south side of Oklahoma City. We serve a nearly 100% Latino population, many of whom are acquiring English as a second language.
My students are incredible people who want to learn and who are willing to work hard, despite many obstacles and additional responsibilities in their lives at home.
On the first day of school, one of my students stayed after class to ask for additional problems because he was determined to grow as a math student. Over the past month, his classmates have joined him in that request. These students need hands-on resources and activities in order to make connections between what they are learning at school and their realities.
My Project
Having a backpack is a basic necessity of being a middle school student. Our school requires mesh or clear backpacks, and there are many students who could not provide themselves with one over the course of the first semester.
While many of these students are some of my most responsible, keeping track of class materials without somewhere to store them has made coming to class prepared an added challenge in their day-to-day school lives.
Completed homework is often forgotten at home and pencils quickly go missing as they move through their days. These clear backpacks would allow my students to begin the semester strong and stay organized for the rest of this year and into next year.
